‘The lion of Panjshir’ was the Afghan politician and military commander who fought brilliantly against the Russians during their occupation, and led the Northern Alliance that resisted the Taliban. He was murdered in 2001 on the orders of Osama bin Laden, two days before 9/11. (The Panjshir valley has once again been the last redoubt of resistance in the face of the recent Taliban takeover).
