Horatio Clare is a supremely articulate and intelligent writer, known to us most recently for his magical retracing of Bach’s journey across northern Germany in Something of His Art and for his remarkable Light in the Dark: A Winter Journal. Ironically, as we read these in late 2018, Clare was in the throes of an acute breakdown, which is the subject of his new book: Heavy Light: A Journey Through Madness, Mania and Healing. We are delighted to bring our listeners a conversation with him, recorded just before publication last week, about what he refers to as “one of the stranger journeys of a travelling life”.
