Kreidolf (1863-1956) was a Swiss painter and leading figure in the Jugendstil movement who also wrote and illustrated children’s books. In this enchanting tale from 1924, three gnomes set out to visit the Winter Queen in a sledge drawn by red squirrels. Icicles are climbed and used as musical instruments, trees are bent into animal shapes by the weight of snow; there are starry nights, pearly dawns, warm fires, a winter feast. A heavenly book to share with small people aged 4 and over.
