Delightful and clever selection: Bannerman’s nose must spend much of its time dusted with pollen, like one of Eva Ibbotson’s heroines (Anna Grazinsky, in the book with a dachshund that swallowed a diamond – but we are getting diverted!). The star-nosed mole’s conk is particularly astute, and so this fine creature has been taken as a sort of familiar by the author in her quest for the almost undoable – to convey scents in words.
