Majorelle (1886-1962) was a French painter who travelled widely in Italy and Egypt before settling in Morocco in 1917; he became well-known as an Orientalist painter (with shades of Edward Hopper). He bought a plot of land in Marrakech, built a house and set about making the gardens that still bear his name – and his blue. (A new edition.)
